My name is Ioana. I am a journalist living in Greece since early 2021.

I run a small independent newsroom in Romania (remotely and through a somewhat intense commuting schedule). I freelance for various international publications. And I am a PhD candidate in the department of Social Anthropology at Panteion University in Athens. Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and publication archives.

I speak Greek, but this wasn’t the case in the beginning. When I moved here, three and a half years ago, I felt a bit lost. If you don’t speak the language, the media landscape can be difficult to navigate. So this is my attempt at a weekly deconstruction of the news in a way that is (maybe) less overwhelming for everyone.

Most of my sources are in Greek, so keep your Google Translate Chrome Extension (or whatever else you’re using) on.

Any feedback or thoughts are welcome, so do write back. I’d like to know more about you and what you’d like to read about. Do you care about politics? The environment? Beaches? Of course you care about beaches.

Bureaucratic issues? Food? And what the hell is σιγά σιγά and why is everyone saying it, especially when something simple takes forever?

Let’s have a conversation, so that I can tailor my content to be as useful to you as possible.

And, most importantly, enjoy the ride. It can get bumpy in Greece - but I promise, it’s worth it.
